1855 – Hermanus started. A shepherd and teacher by the name of Hermanus Pieters stumbled upon a spring just to the west of the Mossel River Farm during his travels to find good grazing for his sheep, and settled there. He spread the word about this good grazing during summer and other farmers started settling in the area. It was known as Hermanuspietersfontein until the town received municipal status, when the name was shortened to Hermanus.
1868 – first school built at St Peter’s Mission School, attached to the newly built St Peter’s Church.
Due to the excellent fishing on offer in the bay, more and more fishermen and their families settled here.
1879 – local residents petitioned to gain more control over their own affairs and security over their dwellings (town proclamation).
1891 – The Cape Government Gazette 7309 publishes the names of the first 3 members of the new Village Management Board - James John Warrington, Daniel van Blommestein and Christoffel Henn.
1904 – Received municipal status and renamed Hermanus.
